The 6th Grade Band is made up of second-year instrumentalists who continue their musical journey on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, and percussion. As the year progresses, additional instruments are introduced to complete the full band instrumentation, including tuba, euphonium (baritone), bassoon, oboe, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone.
Once these instruments are introduced, students may audition— with parent permission— for the opportunity to transition to one of these instruments on a permanent basis.
The 6th Grade Band meets daily and focuses on strengthening and expanding the foundational skills developed in 5th grade band. Students who did not participate in the Coopersville 5th Grade Band program will work with the band directors to develop an individualized plan to ensure a successful transition into the ensemble.
Students perform in two major concerts each year: the Holiday Concert and the Spring Concert. As a performance-based course that builds sequentially throughout the year, 6th Grade Band requires a full-year commitment.
The 8th Grade Band is comprised of fourth-year instrumentalists performing on flute, oboe, clarinet, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium (baritone), tuba, and percussion.
The ensemble meets daily and focuses on refining advanced individual technique while strengthening full ensemble precision and musicality. Students continue to develop tone quality, range, rhythmic accuracy, articulation, balance, blend, and expressive performance skills in preparation for high school-level expectations.
Throughout the school year, students perform in multiple events, including Solo & Ensemble, a combined choir and band Holiday Concert, a festival concert and evaluation, and the Spring Concert. Eighth grade students also have the special opportunity to march with the high school band in the Memorial Day Parade, providing an exciting transition experience into the high school program.
